New mid-2023 population estimates show that Herefordshire's resident population is 189,900

1/22/2025 12:00:00 PM

Headline results from the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) latest Mid-Year Population Estimates for Herefordshire:

·       Population Change: From mid-2020 to mid-2023, the population grew at its fastest rate in 20 years, with an average annual increase of 1,300 residents, driven by net inward migration. This growth followed a decline between mid-2017 to mid-2020.

·       Annual Variations: Annual growth has been unpredictable since 2016 due to Brexit, COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, which have affected migration nationwide.

·       Older Population: Herefordshire still has an older population than the national average, with higher proportions of people aged 65 and over and older working-age adults (aged 45 to 64), but lower proportions of younger working-age adults (aged 16 to 44) and children (aged under 16).

·       Birth and Death Rates: Birth rates have been dropping since 2018 and deaths have been increasing since 2014 due to an ageing population. Without people moving into the county, the population would decrease.
