Census 2021: new data on health, disability and unpaid care

Monday 14 August 2023 9.05am

Headline results from the Census 2021 for disability and unpaid care is now available to download from the Census 2021 webpage. You can explore the data yourself on www.ons.gov.uk/census. The following are a few key points about Herefordshire:

  • The Census 2021 was conducted during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which may have influenced how people perceived and rated their health and on how people perceived and undertook their provision of unpaid care
  • Self-reported levels of general health were similar to the national picture and similar to 10 years ago - around 4 in 5 residents report good or very good health.
  • A similar proportion as nationally who reported having any physical or mental health conditions or illnesses lasting or expected to last 12 months or more - 17% of residents[1]
  • The number of residents aged 5 and over who provided unpaid care (17,000) was less than 10 years ago; probably as a result of the pandemic

[1] Not comparable with the previous Census due to definitional reasons.
