Census 2021 data on UK Armed Forces veterans

Sunday 4 December 2022 6.05pm

On the 10th November 2022 the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) released the Census 2021 data on UK Armed Forces veterans. Headline results and key statistics for Herefordshire are now available to download from the Census 2021 webpage. This is the first time that a Census asked questions about Veterans and therefore the first time we have had data of this kind.

Key points from this data release include:

  • 9,600 Herefordshire residents aged 16 and over served in either the UK armed forces, UK reserve armed forces or both - 6.1% compared to 3.8% nationally
  • 11% of households in Herefordshire had at least one member who was a veteran, compared to 7% nationally
  • The largest proportion (and number) of veterans are located in the Credenhill, Weobley and Wellington area of the county

You can explore the data yourself using the Census maps on the ONS website.  These new interactive maps compare Herefordshire to the rest of England and Wales, and you can zoom in to the smallest statistical geographies (output areas).  Please note that data for wards and parishes is not yet included.
